Fast fashion: gets its name from the rapid design, production, distribution, and marketing of clothing. This means thousands of people get to buy clothing in mass amounts, each being different, at a very low price.

The term Fast fashion came in the 1990s when the brand Zara was established in New York, and the New York Times named it “Fast Fashion.” Since Zara’s mission was to allow garments to go from the sketch book to being sold in stores in just 15 days. Zara is not the only biggest player here there are over 5 of them that are mass producing to this day. The biggest players include Zara, SHIEN, UNIQLO, Forever 21, and H&M.

According to an analysis conducted by Business Insider, the production of fashion accounts for 10% of the total carbon emissions worldwide. This industry depletes water resources and contaminates rivers and streams, with 85% of all textiles ending up in landfills annually. Continuing on, laundering garments releases tons upon tons of garment residue into our oceans and travels towards our beaches and our shrinking fresh water we consume daily.

In the fashion industry, consumer awareness means that people know more about and care about how the industry affects the environment, communities, and morals. This change is mostly happening because people are more worried about the bad effects of fast fashion, like making too many clothes, polluting the environment, and having bad working conditions. Consumers who know what they want are changing how they shop to reflect their own ideals. This is pushing the business to be more open and use more environmentally friendly methods
